How the Numerical Aperture Calculator Works

The Numerical Aperture (NA) is a dimensionless number that characterizes the range of angles over which an optical system can accept or emit light. In optical fibers, it quantifies the "light-gathering ability" of the fiber based on the refractive index difference between the core and the cladding.

Figure 1: The Numerical Aperture (NA) defines the acceptance cone of the fiber. Light entering within this cone is guided by Total Internal Reflection (TIR).
NA = n2core − n2clad
NA = sinθmax
The Numerical Aperture Formulas

Understanding the Variables:

  • NA Numerical Aperture: The light-gathering power of the optical system.
  • ncore Core Index: The refractive index of the fiber's center material.
  • nclad Cladding Index: The refractive index of the outer layer.
  • θmax Acceptance Angle: The maximum half-angle of the entrance cone.
Engineering Significance For light to be guided via Total Internal Reflection, the core index must be greater than the cladding index. A higher NA allows the fiber to capture more light from an LED or laser but can increase modal dispersion in multi-mode fibers, limiting data bandwidth.
